剧情梗概：
底特律是世界闻名的汽车城，这里的机械工业已经到了出神入化的地步。墨菲（彼得•威勒PeterWeller饰）是底特律的一个普通警察，既没有非凡身手、也没有高超技术。一次，他执行任务时被一伙暴徒暴打致死，从此他的人生轨迹改变了。底特律的科学家没能救活他的身体，却能将他的头脑和机械完美地合二为一。墨菲成了一个有着人类头脑和机械身体的机械警察！身上配备了各种武器、能应付各种各样的暴力活动的墨菲成了底特律警察的王牌。然而墨菲发生意外后他的家人却神秘失踪了，墨菲打击罪恶之余一直在竭力寻找家人。令人意外的是，墨菲的机械身体却是操控在一伙利益集团手中。他们一直都在利用墨菲干着各种罪恶勾当。幕后花絮：为这部电影配乐的是电影音乐大师巴索普列多斯（BasilPoledouris），除了本片之外还为《冷血骑兵》、《星河战队》、《暴走潜龙》、《猎杀红色十月》等硬汉类电影创作配乐。机器战警查看犯罪纪录的电脑，实际上是一个北方电信电话交换设备。其中一幕是ED-209第一次出现在会议桌前即疯狂射杀一位年轻员工的画面，导演刻意让这个镜头持续几秒以上的长度，并将之延宕在布满血红般子弹的尸体，压倒在属于未来底特律的雪白模型上，借以制造一种荒谬可笑的喜剧效果。片中的场景虽然设置的是在密歇根州的底特律，实际上是在德克萨斯州的达拉斯拍摄的。在电影院的宣传片中，采用的背景音乐出自于影片《终结者》（TheTerminator1984)中终结者的出场，这部电影同样也是讲述一个从人转换成的机器人。服装太热也过于沉重，彼得威勒由于失水过多差不多每天要减轻3磅的体重，最终就在服装里安装了一个空调。编剧爱德华诺麦尔（EdwardNeumeier）是在路过影片《银翼杀手》（BladeRunner1982）的拍摄现场之后，就构想出了《机器战警》这部电影。编剧和制片原以为在电影中描绘的他们的形象会惹毛那些警察。事实相反，他们非常喜欢。当机器战警靠近迪克琼斯的办公室，第一次准备要抓住他的时候，琼斯正配合着影片的配乐击打响指。电影评价：要说明一下，《RoboCop》当然也有很多偏颇的理念和自相矛盾之处，比如一方面是对大集团的反感，另一方面又表现出对大工业时代的留恋，最简单的例子就是在影片中只要离开城市就不安全，郊外就象是匪徒的领地等等（又想起了暴力13区，不谋而合，呵呵，人类太迷恋城市生活了，完全忘记了自身从何处来，那么，我们还能不能找到向何处去呢？）。影片的背景被放在了美国的汽车城底特律，放眼望去到处都是机械的感觉，而色彩也偏向于暗灰色，这正符合影片的主旨在机器时代人性的异化。给人留下深刻印象的是墨非的内心挣扎，那是一种半人半机械的思维，很难呈现在屏幕上，但又以让人很容易理解的方式呈现在了屏幕上。在墨非的脑海里出现最多的字眼就是家人，寻找家人贯穿影片的始终，而这也时刻提醒观众墨非是一个人不是一个机器。家人，一个多么甜蜜的词啊，然而对于墨非来说，又显得那么的遥远，通过墨非的记忆碎片，我们可以了解到他的婚姻是不幸的，妻子已经和他离婚，孩子又不知道去了哪里。虽然墨非奋力挣扎寻找，然而他的内心依然是孤独的。
