剧情梗概：梦醒时分是一部剧情片，大学毕业之后，马莉（巩俐 饰）只身一人来到繁华的大都市香港，希望能够在这里开拓一片属于自己的新天地。马莉没有香港的身份证，因此在职场上屡屡受挫，某日，她结识了珠宝店的少东家彼得（林俊贤 饰），两人坠入了爱河。彼得一直承诺会给马莉一个名分，但行动上却迟迟没有动静，甚至不愿意讲马莉介绍给家人认识。                                                                    　　一次偶然中，马莉结识了自小生活在英国的商人王国威（钟镇涛 饰），一来二去之间两人成了老相识，马莉常常向王国威倾诉心中的苦楚，而王国威则耐心开解。随着时间的推移，马莉和王国威之间渐渐产生了真挚的感情。王国威邀请马莉到自己身边做自己的助手，哪知道遭到了彼得的严词拒绝。Ma Lei which sounds like "Mary" is a Chinese citizen, living in Hong Kong as the kept woman of a jeweler. She wishes for two things: to get her Hong Kong Identity Card, which will enable her to get work as a legal immigrant; and to marry her boyfriend. However, obtaining an Identity Card is not easy, and getting her boyfriend to introduce her to his family is even more difficult. Mary soon befriends her neighbour, Ken. Their relationship builds. When Mary breaks up with her boyfriend, she moves out, disappearing from Ken's life. After graduating from college, Ma Li (played by Gong Li) came to the prosperous metropolis of Hong Kong alone, hoping to open up a new world of her own here. Ma Li did not have a Hong Kong ID card, so she was repeatedly frustrated in the workplace. One day, she met Peter (Lin Junxian), the young owner of a jewelry store, and the two fell in love. Peter has always promised to give Mary a status, but he has been slow to take any action, and he is not even willing to introduce Mary to his family. By chance, Ma Li met Wang Guowei (played by Zhong Zhentao), a businessman who had lived in England since childhood, and the two became old acquaintances. Ma Li often confided her pain to Wang Guowei, and Wang Guowei patiently explained it. With the passage of time, sincere feelings gradually developed between Ma Li and Wang Guowei.
