Information
This South Bank Show follows Brazil’s leading contemporary artist, Cildo Meireles on his personal journey, as he prepares for a major retrospective which opened this week at Tate Modern. The film is seen uniquely through the eyes of the artist himself.
Meireles is a 60-year-old artist of brilliant ideas who creates powerful political works and enormous, all-enveloping installations which are made from domestic objects like balls, fences, gates, glass and furniture, and offers audience participation and involvement like no other working art today.
Gerald Fox’s South Bank Show films Meireles in his studio in his hometown Rio, as he goes about making a huge tower full of old, rewired radios called Babel, and sticks protest messages on coke bottles and banknotes which are then reintroduced into society as a form of political statement.
He also creates a ring he has made with a magnifying glass on the top and gunpowder underneath which might explode if the viewer spends too long in the sun, and a tiny sculpture made from two pieces of wood, pine and oak called The Southern Cross, and inspired by the Tupi Indians who used to rub these two pieces of wood to create fire.
The film visits a Victorian-era carpenter’s ruler factory outside Rio where Cildo is making thousands of fake rulers with the numbers all mixed up for a work about space and time that will envelop the viewer in a forest of rulers, clocks and numbers.
The film travels with Cildo to Inhotim, the biggest contemporary art centre in Brazil and home to three of his major installations. He walks around and over these amazing works explaining how they are made, their scale and the deep-seated ideas behind them.
Finally, The South Bank Show follows him to London and The Tate Modern for his current show where he installs further large-scale installations - some with bones, coins, communion wafers, chalk, ash and candles.
Through this wonderfully visual film, for which one of Meireles’ sons has composed the music, we gain a deep insight into one of the most exciting and challenging artists working today. This South Bank Show is made by BAFTA, RTS and Grierson award winning film-maker and artist Gerald Cox.
