剧情梗概：
一帮年轻人在北京动物园门口卖包，没有营业执照常常被警察光顾。建军（雪村饰）是其中一个小伙子，他爱上了大家乐音乐茶座的服务员沈红（范霞饰）。他为她省钱买栗子，为她挨乘务员狠揍了一顿，为她排长长的队办签证，却还是得不到沈红的爱。更无奈的是，沈红不但一心想着要出国，还投入了建军朋友的怀抱。沈红被流氓纠缠，三舅见状，前去搭救，不料受了重伤身亡。大家成立了复仇队，却搭上了更多人的性命。沈红走的前一天晚上，同意和倾慕自己已久的建军共度一夜，却又节外生枝。焦灼、无奈和迷失，在这晚的滂沱大雨中交织。一个关于包子和避孕套的故事上个世纪八十年代，北京大家乐音乐茶座内有一群无照经营包子的年轻人常聚，其中一个叫刘建军的小伙子爱上了一名叫沈红的服务生，他想方设法的攒钱在大夏天给沈红买糖炒栗子。而沈红只想出国，她做的一切都是为了这样一个目标，所以她并不想接受建军的爱。建军的好友交通警察三舅为了救沈红而壮烈牺牲。为了给三舅报仇，建军的亲弟弟建国亲手杀了歹徒，建国的女朋友黄三儿也搭上了自己年轻的性命而这时沈红拿到了第二天一早去美国的机票和全部手续，是出于感恩，还是出于愧疚，还是出于破罐破摔，还是出于某种醒悟？沈红答应与建军共度在国内的最后一晚，却提出了一个十分合理的要求：避孕。当晚的北京，下着滂沱大雨，为了找到一只安全套，刘建军终于在大雨和那个年代举目望去毫无二样的北京平房中迷失了方向
